Impact as geometry

Shozo Shimamoto was a Japanese artist and founding member of the Gutai Art Association. His early “Bottle Crash” works involved throwing or exploding bottles of paint onto surfaces, transforming impact and chance into artistic form. Shimamoto’s later performances continued this exploration of kinetic color, material unpredictability, and ritual gesture.

His work helped establish Gutai’s emphasis on direct physical engagement with material.
