Shields built a world of thread and rhythm.
Canvases were sewn, painted, suspended — sculpture and tapestry merging. In his world, pattern is structure, and color becomes architecture in motion.

Process is treated as a means toward a resolved structure, receding once form is complete. In Alan Shields’ work, process remains active within the structure itself. Actions of joining, layering, and extending operate as continuous conditions rather than steps toward closure.
The work develops through accumulation and adjustment. Boundaries do not stabilize; edges remain open, allowing form to extend, shift, and reconfigure over time.
