Carla Accardi

light as graphic plane

Carla Accardi was an Italian painter and a key figure in postwar Italian abstraction. Associated with the Forma 1 group, she explored a grammar of signs—curving strokes, glyph-like shapes—arranged in dense rhythmic fields.

In the 1960s Accardi began painting on sicofoil, a transparent plastic that allowed light to pass through the work. These pieces blur boundaries between painting and environment, turning gesture into spatial event.

Her color evolved from stark black-and-white to vivid oranges, greens, and pinks, emphasizing optical rhythm.
