Gesture as generative field
Ayako Rokkaku

Ayako Rokkaku

ah-YAH-koh roh-KAH-koo

Ayako Rokkaku builds a world of gesture and color.

Paint spreads across the surface in dense, turbulent fields, moving under the pressure of the hand.

Figures drift through the currents of paint — appearing, dissolving, and re-forming.

In her world, image is not drawn. It gathers.

How can recognizable images emerge from the act of painting rather than from drawing or design?
This is some text inside of a div block.

In most painting traditions, the image begins as a drawing. The composition is planned before the paint touches the surface. Ayako Rokkaku works in the opposite direction. She spreads paint directly with her hands, building dense fields of color and gesture across the canvas. At first there is no image, only movement. Gradually, faces, bodies, and creatures begin to appear, condensing from the surrounding paint. The figures are not drawn into the work; they emerge from the activity of painting itself.
