Monumentality is sometimes understood as a matter of scale or visual impact rather than structural organization. In I. M. Pei’s work, geometric relationships enforce presence through intersecting planes, proportional intervals, and axial alignment. Edges, orientation, and spacing define the structure of the building, producing a perceptible hierarchy that registers monumentality without relying on ornament.
Planes, light, and volumes are coordinated so that scale is controlled and form reads as a single, coherent system. Spatial divisions and interval articulate the logic of order, sustaining presence through proportion rather than decoration.
