In Issey Miyake’s work, pleating functions as a procedural system that produces form, motion, and internal volume. Repeated folds organize surfaces so that shape, rhythm, and dimensionality emerge through technique rather than applied styling.
Folds interact relationally, regulating intervals, proportional relationships, and continuity across the surface. Movement and volume are encoded in the sequence of pleats rather than imposed externally.
