Banding is traditionally regarded as expressive composition; in Sean Scully’s work, it functions structurally to enforce gravity and stabilize the visual field. Broad horizontal and vertical bands are arranged with weight and proportion so that each color block contributes to perceptual balance rather than individual emphasis.
Edges soften as mass settles, and the overall field maintains cohesion through the accumulation of these calibrated units. Structure emerges from the relational positioning of the bands rather than gesture or decoration.
