Jasper Johns

Jasper Johns builds a world where recognition precedes perception.

Common forms recur—flags, targets, numbers—already known before they are seen.

Images arrive as givens rather than inventions.

Meaning does not develop through narrative or expression.

It accumulates through repetition, delay, and resistance to resolution.

How does recognition interfere with perception here?

Recognition is typically understood as a shortcut to meaning, a way of stabilizing interpretation before perception fully unfolds. In Jasper Johns’ work, recognition operates structurally as an impediment rather than an aid. Familiar forms return repeatedly without explanation, arriving already known and therefore resistant to immediate interpretation. Repetition does not clarify these images; it delays them. Each recurrence holds perception in suspension, forcing attention to linger on material, surface, and process rather than symbolic resolution. What persists is perception-as-interface, where seeing is continually interrupted by knowing, and meaning is held open rather than resolved.

Structual Relations
The following practices are connected through shared structural decisions in form, material, and spatial logic.
