Marcia Hafif

Hafif built a world where color records time.

Each monochrome layer is repetition and interval, pigment registering duration.

In her world, painting becomes endurance — perception measured by persistence.

How does repetition quiet surface here?

Repetition is often understood as expressive gesture; in Marcia Hafif’s work, it functions structurally to sustain the surface.

Each monochrome layer is applied methodically so that gesture recedes and intervals register across the field.

Color stabilizes through sequence, and time is recorded in accumulation rather than expression. The surface remains perceptually active but restrained.
