Richard Serra — Weight as Form

Weight as Form

Richard Serra — Weight as Form

Serra’s torqued ellipses use steel’s density to generate spatial pressure. Curved planes redirect the viewer’s path treating weight as architectural force. Mass becomes form.

What carries the space?

Weight is often treated as a property to be supported or resisted.

Here it becomes the primary shaping force.

Curved planes redirect movement without lightening their mass.

What carries the space is density acting architecturally.

The form does not relieve its own gravity.
